Project name: ECO-CIVIC PARK
Introduction
The Insieme Cooperative is based in Vicenza and since 1980 it has engaged in environmental and social themes. Moreover, it collaborates with local governments on the issues of placement of disadvantaged people and waste management.
The cooperative already keeps a second-hand market, but we feel the need to create a new area dedicated to waste recycling, closely related to the second-hand market. The connection between these two sites would allow the cooperative to make citizens sensitive to the issue of reuse. Indeed, a significant part of materials could be recycled, therefore reducing waste to a minimum and making the most of reuse.
The creation of an eco-civic park makes a great contribution to waste disposal and to the modification of the citizens’ everyday habits towards the material intended for recycling and reuse.
Objectives
- the realization in other European countries of eco-civic parks, as places dedicated to the collection and recycling of domestic waste, adjoining green areas destined for games and environmental education activities. It is an open public space, shared with the local administration;
- the diffusion and the exchange of good environmental procedures, addressed both to citizens, associations and public administrations.
Activities
- workshops for the planning of places dedicated to the recycling and reuse of materials;
- realization of eco-civic parks in various European countries;
- experimentation of methods for the citizens’ participation;
- realization of a manual (of a site) of good practices, to be used as a tool for the new proposal of similar experiences and as a laboratory of new ideas.

Description of the organisation
The Insieme Cooperative was the winner, together with other three European partners, of the Golden Star Award 2009 on the issue of “Decrease and Sustainable Life-styles”.
Insieme Cooperative is composed by 110 members, among whom 35 disadvantaged people and 30 volunteers. It is engaged in waste recycling and reuse, and it administers 4 shops and 8 recycling areas.
